What a finish&.!! At the start, the volleyball program was intended to give our kids the chance to learn fundamentals and have a great time learning a new game. Little did the coaches know that our SPX kids had post season in their blood and wanted a chance at the title?
This years 2007 volleyball season came with a big bang for all three teams listed. Our 6th grade girls decided to enter with some novice experience. Despite experience, this class is blessed with talented girls who are willing to learn and most importantly have a good time with the game. There was some question with the serving, but when it came to game time, the game face walked into each gym with each player and had the net play in their minds.
Their season came up short by 1 win for the post season, but it definitely put a taste in their mouth for the 2008 season.
The 8th grade class of our boys and girls registered both a boys & girls team. The boys are returning from an exceptional 2006 season coming in 2nd for CYO. The girls had the momentum and fire from basketball and wanted to have some fun.
Despite some CYO hurdles over the season, our caches maintained the ever changing schedules and faced each team without reservation. Intimidation was not a factor for this class this season and each opponent was going to be a notch on the post.
CYO introduced a new practice this year to re-introduce the Catholic in CYO. Before each match, the teams would meet on the court and recite a prayer together. Witnessing some of these matches, it was a bit of pride to see how SPX kids did this without the rolling of the eyes, or any kind of resentment. SPX kids are always taught the respect in sports and this is a hats off to our coaches teaching this invaluable messages.
I think for the 1st time in a long time, both teams made post season play and this coordinator already put the call into the Dicks on Holman road to get ready for a large parking lot party.
The girls took on Forest Ridge, while the boys faced their nemesis, St. Louise. Both teams took the matches to the 3rd and final tie breaker, but unfortunately came up short.
Without any regrets, both teams had the excitement of learning the invaluable lesson in competition. Lets keep and eye out for some of this kids in high school sorts. It will be interesting to see who the next SPX athlete will be making their alma mater proud.
GREAT JOB 8th GRADE!!!! THANKS FOR A FANTASTIC 2006-07 SEASON IN SPORTS and HAVE A GREAT TIME in HIGH SCHOOL!!!!
DID ANYONE KNOW WE HAD A BASEBALL TEAM&.?? I guess if these newsletters had some consistency, you would have. Actually, SPX did not have a team. Like many of our future hall of famers, the 6th grade had some of the boys play with our neighboring parish St. Lukes.
The primary reason I mention this team is not because they are CYO. Our SPX kids participate in MTYAA, ASA/NSA, Sno-King, etc& to show their talents. In addition, some of our kids participate in other kinds of extra curricular like tennis, fencing, and rock climbing.
The reason I write this is that even though SPX is a small school in comparison to some of the other CYO schools, SPX kids carry themselves into any sport with the discipline and respect any sport demands. SPX kids turn into examples instead of being some kids looking for some where to play.
Suffice it to say, SPX contributed a great deal to the St. Luke 6th grade boys team. When we werent smacking doubles & triples at the plate, we would attack any errant ball on defense. At the start of the season, St. Lukes felt obligated to make room for us. By the end of the season, the coach would be nervous prior to game time until his SPX kids showed up. Once we walked onto the field, he knew the teams chances improved greatly for a W.
The CYO season ends early in comparison to other leagues, but our kids came out making new friends knowing they contributed in a huge way to this squad.
The one reality about youth sports is that more the 70% of these kids we play with, and against will more then likely be our team mates in high school. Youth sports are a great time for kids and are exciting to see how lasting friendships start with just a hello.
UPCOMING DATES: HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!!!! |
